This is the story of the Willington Waggonway, an early wooden railway built in 1785 which was discovered on Tyneside†in 2013. Identified as a discovery of international significance by railway experts, the waggonway was rescued and preserved by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums with funding from Arts Council England.
This book explores the history of the Willington Waggonway and it explains how study of the preserved timbers and stones have given new insight into the importance of railways before the steam locomotive.
