The badge design is based on a Sestertius (roman coin) of Hadrian from the River Tyne, Newcastle. Taken from the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (housed at the Great North Museum: Hancock). The design also features the National Trail acorn emblem and the UNESCO World Heritage Site symbol.
